Traditional vs Implant-Supported Tooth Bridges: Which is Right for You?

October 17, 2018 //  by Dr. Luminita Markham

young woman with beautiful smileDental bridges are one of the most common treatments for replacing a row of missing teeth. Patients considering a tooth bridge in Auburn, CA have a couple of different options, including traditional and implant-supported solutions. Both options can be crafted from high-grade ceramic or zirconia. These advanced materials mimic natural tooth enamel for a brilliant, lifelike appearance. Today, Dr. Luminita Markham explores traditional vs implant-supported tooth bridges so our patients can make an informed decision regarding their oral health.

Traditional Tooth Bridge in Auburn, CA

Traditional bridges have been around for quite some time. These restorations consist of artificial teeth (pontics) to fill in the gap in your smile. The pontics are connected to dental crowns on either side, which are anchored to the natural teeth next to the space. When bonded into place, the two crowns rest on the adjacent teeth while the prosthetic teeth “bridge the gap” in your smile.

To place a traditional bridge, small amounts of tooth enamel must be removed. This makes more room for your new restoration and also helps the bridge bond strongly to the natural teeth.

Pros and Cons of Traditional Tooth Bridges

Conventional bridges are often chosen because the treatment can be completed quickly. This is also a common option for patients who do not qualify for oral surgery due to medical reasons.

One of the most significant disadvantages to a traditional bridge is that some natural tooth structure must be compromised. Additionally, the lifespan of a conventional bridge is about 10 to 15 years. Therefore, bridges will most likely need to be replaced at some point.

Implant-Supported Tooth Bridge in Auburn, CA

By design, implant-supported bridges are very similar to their traditional counterparts. The primary difference, however, is that these restorations are attached to dental implants rather than natural teeth. This is beneficial for a couple of different reasons. First, the natural tooth structure can remain intact, as there is no need to remove enamel. Secondly, dental implants help preserve existing jawbone and prevent bone degradation. Therefore, when you choose implant-supported restorations, you are enhancing your overall oral health. Best of all, unlike traditional bridges, implant-supported restorations can last a lifetime with proper care.

Exploring Candidacy for Implant-Supported Bridges

Patients considering implant-supported restorations must have healthy bone structure, as the implant posts should be completely surrounded by dense bone tissue. In addition, patients should be free from serious oral health conditions, such as extensive decay or periodontal disease. If these issues are present, Dr. Markham will recommend a restorative treatment plan to eliminate decay and infection before placing dental implants.

Who is not a candidate for an implant-supported bridge?

The majority of patients seeking dental implants are eligible for treatment. However, there are certain instances when oral surgery may be considered a risk. For example, individuals who have certain medical conditions, such as immune diseases, may be better suited for traditional restorative options.
