Getting up to Speed With Dental Implants

June 15, 2021 //  by davidwank

Dental Implants

Restorative dentistry is undoubtedly a useful tool for many patients. It doesn’t matter if you require our help following an accident, an emergency dental treatment, or purely for cosmetic reasons.

We are here to help all our patients achieve the best possible version of their smiles and restore their dental structures’ functionality. To this end, dental health specialists such as our own Dr. Luminita Markham recommend using dental implants. Which one serves you best? What types are there? We’ll discuss much of the relevant information here.

What Are the Types of Dental Implants Available?

If you are in the position of needing dental implants to replace one or a couple of missing teeth, you should know that there are two different types of dental implants.

The options you can choose from having a few differences. These types of dental implants differ in specific areas you should carefully consider. You could categorize implants into one of two categories.

However, please note that your periodontal health is of much importance regardless of the type chosen. According to this study, there appears to be a relationship between the loss of periodontal tissues and an increased failure of a patient’s dental implants.

Endosteal Implants

What is known as Endosteal is the most common type of dental implant used today.

Sometimes, we use them as an alternative to a bridge or removable dentures. Endosteal implants include screw types (threaded), cylinder types (smooth), or bladed types.

At Maidu Dental, we can help you determine which type of dental implant will work best for you. Endosteal implants are safe and effective. However, something you should consider alongside your dentist is that this type of implant requires sufficient jawbone health and density.

If your Jawbone is narrow, short, or worn down due to past trauma or certain diseases, you might not have the right amount of jawbone needed to hold these types of implants in place.

Subperiosteal Implants

Although they were very popular some time ago, currently, dental health professionals use them when patients have insufficient bone density or height.

Subperiosteal dental implants sit on the jawbone within the gum tissue, with the metal implant post exposed through the gums to hold the denture. Usually, the entire process for this type of dental implant takes only two appointments.

When recommending this option, dentists will carefully consider the issue of stability because the implant does not go directly into the bone but rather sits above it. We want to avoid ineffective restorations due to dental health complications such as periodontal disease.

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

Like any other medical treatment, dental implants and the cost associated with this type of treatment depend on the patient’s situation and current oral health.

The cost of dental implants varies greatly; however, the price typically includes the implant (artificial tooth root), the abutment (support post), and the dental crown (false tooth). Our friends at healthline.com estimate that these implants could cost an average of $2,000 and $3,000.

There might be additional costs to consider if your case requires bone grafting. Before choosing or starting a treatment option, make sure to schedule an appointment with your dentist. During that appointment, you can go over all the options available, keeping your specific needs in mind.

Are Dental Implants a Good Investment?

If you are unsure whether you should choose dental implants over regular dentures, you could consider the following factors when making your decision. Some key elements are listed below:

  • Overall Health: Living with missing teeth will cause your jawbone to deteriorate over time. You’ll also be at risk of choking and digestive issues caused by unproperly chewed food.
  • Convenience: Once you have your implants, you will require fewer visits to your doctor in the long run. You will also spend less money since you will only need to maintain regular oral hygiene like brushing and flossing after every meal.
  • Quality of life: Dentures usually make it more difficult -or even impossible- to eat some foods or drink some beverages; dentures may also cause certain difficulties in speaking or pronunciation.
  • Total out-of-pocket cost: The initial price of dentures may be lower than implants; however, there are many additional costs associated with dentures that patients don’t usually consider at the time of choosing treatment. Some patients fail to consider the added costs of complete replacements. This replacement process may happen anywhere between every 5 to 15 years. Likewise, you might need special brushes, adhesives, and cleaning solutions to maintain dentures properly. Our team will discuss all these with you, so you make an informed decision.
